Alterations in fatty acid composition due to cold exposure at the vegetative stage in rice Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Cruz,Renata Pereira da; Golombieski,Jaqueline Ineu; Bazana,Maiara Taís; Cabreira,Caroline; Silveira,Taíse Foletto; Silva,Leila Picolli da.
Rice is a tropical plant, so cold temperature may be detrimental to its development, depending on the genotype and environmental conditions. Degree of lipid unsaturation has been related to cold tolerance due to its effect on membrane stability. So, the aim of this study was to characterize the fatty acid composition and its alterations due to cold temperature in rice genotypes of diversified origin. Forty-four rice genotypes at the V4 stage were submitted to two temperature conditions: 10°C and 28°C for two days and after this they had their leaves collected for lipid extraction and quantification. Control plants were allowed to regrow until presenting four leaves fully expanded and then were subjected to 10°C for ten days for cold tolerance evaluation....

Cold stress at the booting stage in rice induces spikelet sterility because of aberrant microspore development, which often seriously damages seed production. Some breeding lines with high cold tolerance were developed by using tropical japonica variety Silewah as a donor of cold tolerance; however, the genetic factors that confer cold tolerance of this variety have not been comprehensively analyzed. In this study, phenotypic and molecular characterization of novel cold-tolerant strains derived from crosses with Silewah was performed to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) responsible for cold tolerance. Molecular marker analysis revealed that 2 cold-tolerant strains carried chromosomal segments of Silewah at the same genomic regions on chromosomes 3, 4...

Effect of leaf Water potential on cold tolerance of Coffea arabica L. BABT
Caramori,Lázara Pereira Campos; Caramori,Paulo Henrique; Manetti Filho,João.
Young coffee plants from cultivar Mundo Novo of Coffea arabica were grown without irrigation for 32 consecutive days, to evaluate the effect of leaf water potential on damage caused by low temperatures, under controlled conditions. A wide range of leaf water potentials were evaluated, from - 0.45MPa (wet soil) at the beginning of the experimental period, to - 4.8MPa (severe leaf wilting) at the end. Results showed that under moderate water stress, there was a higher frequency of undamaged plants and lower frequency of severely damaged plants. These results help explain part of the regional variability observed after a frost and stress the importance of new studies associating cold and drought tolerance in coffee.

Genetic parameters and performance of sugarcane families under cold stress in the South of Brazil PAB
Verissimo,Mario Alvaro Aloisio; Oliveira,Ricardo Augusto de; Silva,Sérgio Delmar dos Anjos e; Daros,Edelclaiton; Härter,Adílson.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters for the performance prediction of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) families under natural cold stress, in Southern Brazil, and to identify the best combinations of parents aiming at the selection for tolerance to cold. Fifty-three full-sib families were evaluated in an incomplete block design, with five replicates per family, in the municipality of Pelotas, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Harvest occurred in August 2013, nine months after planting and after cold spells with negative temperatures down to -2.2ºC. Statistical analyses, performed with the mixed model methodology, detected significant differences among families. Heritability estimates among progeny means were...

Inheritance of pinacle exsertion in rice Scientia Agricola
Cruz,Renata Pereira da; Milach,Sandra Cristina Kothe; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos.
Incomplete panicle exsertion is one of the symptoms of cold injury at the reproductive stage of the rice plant (Oryza sativa L.), which damages grain yield and raises disease incidence. For this reason, panicle exsertion is a better indicator of cold tolerance under field conditions than spikelet sterility, which may also be affected by other climatic factors. This work studies the variability of degree of panicle exsertion in rice, under the Southern Brazilian environmental conditions and determines the inheritance and heritability of this trait. Four rice genotypes of different cool temperature reactions at the reproductive stage were crossed and field evaluated, with the F2 generation, in relation to the degree of panicle exsertion and spikelet...

Transcriptome responses to heat- and cold-stress in ladybirds (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulasnt) analyzed by deep-sequencing Biol. Res.
Zhang,Yuhong; Wu,Hongsheng; Xie,Jiaqin; Jiang,Ruixin; Deng,Congshuang; Pang,Hong.
BACKGROUND: Changed temperature not only threaten agricultural production, but they also affect individual biological behavior, population and community of many insects, and consequently reduce the stability of our ecosystem. Insect's ability to respond to temperature stress evolved through a complex adaptive process, thus resulting in varied temperature tolerance among different insects. Both high and low extreme temperatures are detrimental to insect development since they constitute an important abiotic stress capable of inducing abnormal biological responses. Many studies on heat or cold tolerance of ladybirds have focused on measurements of physiological and biochemical indexes such as supercooling point, higher/lower lethal temperatures, survival...
